McGOWAN's WAKE

Lyrics: Jon Heller, Music: Liz Mallin

Brendan Power- Vocals; Bill Brown- Whistle, Bagpipes; Erich Arndt- Guitar; Gary Eurice- Fiddle; Jon Heller- Bass, Bagpipes; Rich Lipski- Banjo, Bass; Tommy Leanza- Drums

Never meant to leave so soon

Not my planned defining tune

The chorus was so clear before

Faded now and gone ashore

Faded now and gone ashore

Lost control of my melody

Nothing more than an effigy

The song continues trapped inside

All alone and unamplified

All alone and unamplified

(Chorus)

When it's all said and done will you say I lived it well?

When it's all said and done say I rose or fell

When it's all said and done it's not my life to take

When it's all said and done will you play my wake?

When it's all said and done will you play my wake?

The song we write has many voices

Each a beginning with many choices

So take my song and sing it loud

It's part of yours and makes me proud

It's part of yours and makes me proud

(Repeat Chorus)

(Instrumental)

(Repeat Chorus x2)

We'll be okay, we'll survive this day

We'll carry on, we'll sing your song

We'll be okay, we'll survive this day

We'll carry on, we'll sing your song

We'll toast your memory, we’ll tell your story

We'll toast your memory, we’ll tell your story

We'll toast your memory, we’ll tell your story

We'll toast your memory, we’ll tell your story

We'll carry on, we'll sing your song

We'll carry on, we'll sing your song

McGowans Wake is a tribute to our friend, Eddie McGowan who we met when he was playing with The Rovers (later renamed Dublin 5). Along with many others we were devastated when he found out he had ALS. Before he passed away he asked Jon if he would play pipes at his wake, an event that was sad but also inspiring as person after person stood and shared stories about how well Eddie lived life. Cheers Eddie! We tell stories about you often my friend! – Jon
